Gripe session: iPhone 3.0
It's been almost two months since the iPhone 3.0 OS update was released. At the time, I recorded my initial reaction to the update. Since that time, I've noticed several things that are having a huge negative impact on my iPhone experience. To be fair, I've also discovered a few more things I really like, but I'll add those as an update to my original post.
Odd problems on my iPhone 3G since the 3.0 update include:
- All of my contacts' pictures were converted to low-res versions, which only display as icons when they call rather than their former full-screen display (some of these photos were taken specifically for the contact, which means I can't even reassign them to get the full-res version back).
- I've been noticing that many of my songs and podcasts randomly use the wrong album art (e.g. album art from an episode of the GeekBrief.tv podcast for a song).
- Slowness! My iPhone 3G now lags in things such as typing, app shutdown (smooth transition from app to home screen usually skipped), certain sound effects sometimes stutter, etc. No wonder the 3GS is twice as fast ....

Using iStat, I've noticed a dramatic increase in memory usage, both wired and active. OS 2.2 rarely used more than half the available ram, whereas OS 3.0 has been dramatically... worse.
With nothing running beside native OS functions, it's not uncommon to have just 1mb free memory. Even on a fresh boot, I barely have any RAM left.
Thankfully running a free-memory app like iStat lets me reclaim a portion of that, but keyboards, applications, everything is running significantly slower. Very disappointed.
I'm curious if you would buy the iPhone again if you could go back knowing what you know now. Most comments I've seen have been to the effect: “It's awesome, but not quite there yet.” I still would like to get one as soon as AT&T spontaneously decides that other carriers do a better job and lets them have it too.
Yeah, right.
Thanks for the update.
@iaian7: Thanks for the input! Proof that it's not just in my head. :D
@John UpChurch: I absolutely would get the iPhone if I had to do it over again. I've never been impressed by any other smartphone OS, though I have yet to try the more recent large-touchscreen phones, like the Palm Pre. The iPhone is wonderful--I just wish they hadn't gucked up the OS. I'm still hopeful a future OS release will restore some of its former glory.
As far as carriers go, they're all some degree of evil. I happen to think AT&T is less evil than some others, and that's why they got the iPhone deal in the first place. Verizon used to (may still) replace the OS on every handset they offer, often replacing OSes that were much better than theirs. AT&Ts coverage, customer service, and features have all been excellent for me. They have some problems, but again, I mostly hear a string of gripes and dropped calls from my Verizon friends. And I get rollover minutes. :D Everyone says they hate AT&T, but seriously, I have no reason to believe any other carrier would do better (with the possible exception of supporting MMS :D). No mobile carrier is truly on our side.
